OTIS, Mass. -- A Massachusetts teen accused of allegedly raping three teens at Camp Lenox in Berkshire County pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday.
A 17-year-old and two other 16-year-olds were arrested Friday, August 30th after the alleged incident at Camp Lenox where the City of Somerville had rented the facility for team-building activities for fall sports teams.
The junior at Somerville High School, allegedly entered a cabin occupied by freshman students on Sunday, August 25th and assaulted three boys who were a part of the Somerville High School soccer team.
The teen has pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated rape of a child, two counts of assault with intent to rape a child, three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and three counts of intimidation of a witness.
The defendant's lawyer, William Korman, says his client just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"According to the victim, my client was telling the other boys not to do what they were going to do," said Korman.
The prosecution says the teen and two other male teens attempted to rape two freshmen boys and used an object to sexually assault a third freshmen boy. Berkshire Assistant District Attorney Rachel Eramo says the two of the victims were able to fight off the assault.
"The defendant and his co-defendants entered and began saying things along the lines of 'we're going to pick someone' pointing to various freshmen that were in the cabin," said Eramo.
The three defendants then tried to convince the accusers not to report the attack, Eramo said.
The teen is being held at the Berkshire County House of Correction on $100,000 cash or $1,000,000 bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday to determine if he is a danger to the public.
Under Massachusetts law, a 17-year-old is considered an adult and automatically charged as one. The two 16-year-old boys, whose names were not released because of their age, were to be arraigned in juvenile court on similar charges.
The investigation is being conducted by Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office assisted by State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office and the Somerville Police Department.
