One dead after Friday night shooting in Schenectady

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - There was a shooting at 1633 Becker Street on Friday night, which fatally wounded a man.

The Schenectady Police Department says 24 year old Jose "Mikey" Torres was fatally wounded by a gun shot wound to his torso.  The second victim, 31-year old Luis Gomez was treated for a wound to his shoulder area.

Authorities say these two victims are brothers and were attending a family celebration at the scene of the shooting.

Family and friends of Torres came out to remember him Saturday. Hugs served as some comfort but the loss was felt on Becker Street. Candles burned and flowers were placed carefully near where Torres was killed. Schenectady Police say it all happened in the backyard of Torres's home at 1633 Becker street where more than two dozen family members including children gathered for a celebration.

"From the details that we got from witnesses a perpetrator approached the backyard area where the party was taking place," said Sgt. Linear with the Schenectady Police Department.

Police say the suspect opened fire striking Torres and his brother. Schenectady Police say the suspect used a handgun, and that they do not believe the shooting was a random act.

Police were called to Becker Street again Saturday as an argument broke out between people at the vigil for Torres. Police say they do not have anyone in custody in connection with the shooting.

Gomez has been released from the hospital and is recovering according to police.

The investigation into this homicide is ongoing.
