Fair patrons invited to learn about the Air National Guard

SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. – The Air National Guard Mobile Experience was at the Schaghticoke Fair over the weekend.

Members of the Air National Guard set up a simulation truck to give fairgoers a taste of what they go through on a daily basis.

"We start them off with basic training just as they would if they were to enter the guard," spokesperson Shimain Rivera explained.

People up for the challenge went through a three-part experience by testing their physical, observational and intellectual abilities.

Father and son Jeremy and Wyatt Gaillard were up for the challenge Sunday afternoon.

"It's a tough job I think," Jeremy Gaillard said.

Jeremy said he is interested in the Air National Guard, but may have missed the age requirement to be a member which is 17 to 39-years-old.

But he said he encourages his nine-year-old son to think about it for the future. "It's a good service to the country," he said.

Officials say Air National Guard members can have a normal life. To become a member requires one weekend in a month and two weeks per year of training and practicing skills to be ready to be deployed.

"They serve a state and federal mission," Rivera said. "So in terms of state, the governor can activate them during a time of civil disobedience or natural disaster and federally, they also protect our home line defense."

Participation was freen and the experience lasted about 20 minutes.
