More people are traveling for Labor Day weekend this year

It's the start to the holiday weekend, and travel is expected to be at its highest levels in five years.

According to AAA, holiday travel will be up about 4 percent from 2012, and its highest since before the recession hit in 2008. At least 46 percent of travelers are expected to leave for vacation Friday.

Most vacationers will be traveling by car this year.  AAA estimates that 34.1 million Americans will be on the roads this holiday weekend. Experts say improved gas prices, a better housing market and increased consumer confidence are some of the reasons for the jump in the number of people traveling.

Air travel is also expected to be busier. More than 2.6 million Americans will fly to their holiday destination.

All this travel is good for the economy. Labor Day travelers are also expected to spend more than they did in 2012.
