SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A large fire broke out at a home in Schenectady around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night.
Multiple units responded to the fire at 1585 Van Vranken Ave. The fire caused heavy smoke that filled the entire neighborhood.
As firefighters entered the home, the chimney collapsed causing debris to fall onto the firefighters below. As a result, five firefighters received minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. They have since been released.
Three adults and two children occupied two out of the four units in the home. Everyone evacuated the home safely after the fire alarm in the home sounded. The family of two adults and a four-year-old child in the upstairs unit are being assisted by the Red Cross. The family in the downstairs unit was not on the scene when Red Cross workers arrived, but assistance will be available to them if needed.
Officials said the house is completely gutted and will be demolished later Friday. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, though they said it does not look suspicious.
Crews were still on the scene of the fire at 6 a.m. Friday as hot spots were still present. Firefighters, however, were not able to enter the home because they said it is unstable.
Van Vranken Avenue was closed as a result of the heavy smoke and crews on the scene, but it has since reopened.
