RENSSELAER, N.Y. – Rensselaer County Legislators are against the City of Troy's plan to make town properties pay city taxes.
Troy has filed a lawsuit in order to draw a dozen properties in the towns of Brunswick, Schaghticoke and North Greenbush, into the city line. This would cause residents of about 70 parcels in the towns to pay more in taxes.
According to the County Legislature, some residents would see their property taxes double.
The Vice Chairman of the Legislature Phil Danahar stated, "It is unfortunate the City of Troy decided against discussing this issue with the municipalities involved and went straight to court. Sadly, there will be an expense to taxpayers for litigating this issue, and that cost could have and should have been avoided."
