Pittsfield Catholic Youth Center seeks new home

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Catholic organization that provides hundreds of Pittsfield-area youths with opportunities to play sports is looking for a new home because its current building is falling apart.
The Catholic Youth Center's board of directors voted to suspend programming at its Melville Street building, and announced is looking elsewhere in the city.
The Melville Street center hosted activities every night of the week during the school year, including basketball, volleyball, cheerleading and lacrosse, serving more than 900 youths last year.
The 100-plus-year-old building owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield needs millions of dollars in repairs, contains asbestos and is prone to flooding.
Board Chairwoman Gail Molari tells The Berkshire Eagle there is no way to come up with that kind of money, but says center programing will continue.
