SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Firefighters from across the Capital Region joined together Friday to remember a fallen hero, Schenectady Fire Department Captain John Nicol Jr., who died this week as a result of an ATV accident.
St. John Evangelist church in Schenectady filled with friends, family, and loved ones for the 47-year-old captain's wake. Those who came say Schenectady has lost a true hero.
Nicol became a Schenectady firefighter in 1990, rising through the ranks, even serving as a deputy chief for a period of time.
Many firefighters joined together in a processional and then a prayer vigil to honor their fallen partner. Those who worked alongside him say he was a shining example of what a firefighter should be. While he was known for being a leader, he was also known and relied upon to lift people's spirits.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at St. John Evangelist church at 10 a.m.
