Firefighter critical after hit by tow truck in Clifton Park

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- A local volunteer firefighter is in critical condition at Albany Medical Center after being hit by a tow truck on a Northway exit ramp in Clifton Park.

The West Crescent Volunteer Fire Department says 66-year-old Allen Ayotte was seriously injured after being struck during a post-accident clean-up on Crescent Road, off of the Northway, on Tuesday.

Crews responded to a four-car accident on the off ramp of Exit 8 where a car hit the guard rail around 6:45 p.m. A tow truck was called to remove the car and that's when the accident happened.

Police say Ayotte was assisting with the accident scene, providing for scene safety through necessary traffic control, when he was accidently struck by the tow truck he was directing.

Chief Bill Bryans says Ayotte suffered serious injuries including broken bones and was immediately transferred to the hospital.

State police say Gary Gerard of Albany was arrested in the incident for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Police say he caused a chain reaction crash along Northway, which the Fire Department including Ayotte responded to.
