FONDA, N.Y. - Relatives of a retired stock car driver say he's is in critical condition after being hit by a tire that came off a race car and landed in the pit area at the Fonda Speedway in Montgomery County.
Peter Buanno tells the Daily Gazette of Schenectady that his brother David Buanno suffered a broken neck and spine when the tire hit him on Saturday and is currently recovering at Albany Medical Center Hospital. He says his brother was visiting pit crew members when he was injured.
Albany lawyer Peter Scolamiero representing the Fonda Speedway explains, "The tire came off the car and rolled down the raceway, and hit barrier and flew up into the air and into the pit area."
"It was a freak accident and my client expresses sympathy to the family," Scolamiero said.
The Fonda Speedway released the following statement on the incident:
"Fonda Speedway would like to express their sincere sympathy and well wishes for a speedy recovery to David Buanno, who was injured in an unforeseen accident on Saturday night at the speedway. Mr. Buanno, an experienced race car driver who is a member of the Fonda Speedway's Hall of Fame, was visiting drivers in the pit area of the track when a tire suddenly and un-expectedly broke off of a car involved in a 4 cylinder race and rolled down the raceway behind the fence and ultimately struck Mr. Buanno. Several articles have inaccurately stated that this tire was a racing tire weighing up to 75 pounds, however this was a street tire weighing considerably less. The speedway has been and continues to cooperate with authorities investigating the incident."
