SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A Saratoga Springs man was arrested for rape and assault after leading police on a chase through Saratoga County Sunday.
Officers responded to the intersection of Nelson Avenue and Gridley Avenue after 7 a.m. on Sunday for a female victim who was visibly distraught and appeared to have been assaulted. The victim told police that she had been beaten and choked by her alleged boyfriend, 24-year-old Anthony Smith, inside a home on Nelson Ave.
As police approached the house, Smith ran from the home, drove off in a Volkswagen and refused to stop. A chase began just after 7:30 a.m.
Smith led police on a chase through the City of Saratoga Springs, Malta, the Village of Ballston Spa, the Town of Milton, and back into the City of Saratoga Springs where he crashed the vehicle into the woods at the intersection of Pine Road and Grand Avenue.
The pursuit ended just before 8 a.m. Smith was not injured and no other vehicles were damaged.
Smith was charged with unlawful fleeing police officer in motor vehicle, rape in the first degree, assault in the third degree, driving while intoxicated and other charges.
He was arraigned in Saratoga Springs City Court and remanded to the Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash/$50,000 bail.
The victim was transported to Saratoga Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.
