NASSAU, N.Y. - The Gilmore Colloton Ball field is home to the Nassau Coed Softball League. According to league organizer Howie Mcardle, someone drove on the field causing extensive damage Saturday morning.
"Somebody maliciously chewed the property up with their personal truck, ATV, whatever," he said.
Mcardle said with a playoff tournament coming up, the league was left without a field to play on and did not have the money to pay for what he said is close to $7,000 in damage.
"We're hoping to perhaps come up with the funding this week to get machinery in here to clean up the divots,"he said. "Get the damage out to spread some material."
Mcardle said a local store donated a mound of dirt, but he's hoping for a lot more donations and help from volunteers.
"We represent eight different teams, and we try to have a good time with it," he said. "And, of course, this is depressing."
State Police are handling this incident but have not returned calls.
