Police: Bottle bomb exploded on Central Ave.

COLONIE, N.Y. - The Colonie Police Department is investigating a bottle bomb detonation that took place around 5 a.m. Tuesday on Central Avenue near Locust Park.

Police say a passing motorist reported that their vehicle was struck and damaged by an unknown item. Responding officers discovered that the car had been struck by concrete debris that was sent into the roadway by an exploding bottle bomb left on the sidewalk.

The bottle bomb was constructed from a 2-liter plastic soda bottle containing an unknown chemical and unknown reactive metal.

There are no other incidents currently under investigation, but police say these types of homemade bottle bombs are easily constructed and have been found in the past.

Anyone encountering a suspicious device or container that may be filled with chemicals or is emanating a suspicious odor is cautioned to stay away from it and urged to contact their local police agency immediately.

Anyone with information or who may have been in that area at that time is asked to contact the Colonie Police Department at 783-2744.
