Schenectady man arrested after gun discharges, shoots groin
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady Police Department has made an arrest following a shooting call at the Imperial Motel on 927 State St. in Schenectady.
Police received a call for a man reportedly shot in the groin. Investigation revealed that Joseph A. Hewitt, 21, of Schenectady, accidently shot himself when the revolver he was carrying in his waistband discharged. He was treated on scene by members of the Schenectady Fire Department and transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment. His medical condition is currently unknown.
He was arrested and charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd-Degree, one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd-Degree, and one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the 4th-Degree.
The handgun had been reported stolen from the State of North Carolina. Hewitt was unable to legally possess a firearm as he had been previously convicted of a crime.
