COLONIE, N.Y. – Dog owners may be excited to learn that the town will be constructing two new dog parks within the next year.
Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan announced Wednesday that they are anticipating a fall opening for a Colonie Mohawk River Park dog park and a spring 2014 opening for a dog park adjacent to the Colonie Town Golf Course.
"Many residents have asked to have dog parks in the Town, and I am very pleased to announce that we are planning to create two parks for Town dog owners," said Mahan. "I am also pleased that through public/private cooperation, we will be able to provide the parks at no additional cost to our residents."
Both dog parks will be developed with donated materials and labor will be provided by the town. Plans are still being finalized for fencing donations.
Both dog parks will be located in easily accessible areas, close to existing parking, but removed from residential areas. They will also contain a larger enclosure for big dogs, smaller enclosure for small dogs and a covered shelter for residents. All dogs must be accompanied by an adult or a youth age 16 or older.
To use the dog park, residents must register their dogs with the Colonie Town Clerk, pay a modest annual fee and provide proof that their dogs have been inoculated against rabies and distemper. All dogs registered to use the dog parks will receive an identification tag, which must be displayed on the dog's collar when the dog is in the park.
