Lake George Village Board votes in favor of rezoning for taller buildings

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. -- A stretch of real estate along Canada Street in Lake George could soon be the location of a six-story Marriott.

"We were ready for retirement so we sold the property," said Gino Chiaravalle, owner of Giuseppe's on Canada Street in Lake George.

He sold the restaurant to developer Dave Kenny five years ago.

"He is a very nice man," said Chiaravalle.  "He feels for the town more than anything."

Monday night, the Lake George Village Board unanimously voted in favor of rezoning an area along Canada Street to allow for taller buildings.

"This project is being offered to us and the new zoning regulations will allow for taller buildings because we can't expand any other way," said Lake George Mayor Robert Blais.

Some village business owners, however, feel the board is rushing things.

"Slow Down," said lawyer Susan Millington. "This is a defining moment for the village."

The zoning changes, according to Blais, will allow for increased tourism and revenue.

As for when the hotel could be built, the application still needs to go through approval and get the green light from the planning board.
