PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Police in Pittsfield say a 2-year-old girl died Saturday afternoon after drowning in a backyard swimming pool.
Police say the grandfather of the girl, 2-year-old Raquel Paris, discovered her under water in the family's soft-wall pool at a home on Victor Street around 3:15 p.m. Saturday.
Pittsfield Fire officials responded and attempted CPR on the girl. She was then transported to Berkshire Medical Center where the young girl was pronounced dead.
Her death has local lifeguards stressing the importance of paying close attention to any children playing in the water.
"Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for kids between the ages of 2 and 14. So anyone in that age bracket, especially if they're a non-swimmer, are at risk. And without supervision anything can happen," said Cheryl Hardcastle, YMCA Regional Aquatic Director.
Police say the death is not considered suspicious. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
The incident remains under investigation.
