SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Opening Day at Saratoga Race Course is a tradition for so many people, and part of that tradition involves lining up at the gates early in the morning to get a good seat.
Despite temperatures expected to hit the mid-90s, racing fans came out strong Friday morning for Opening Day of the 150th anniversary of Saratoga Race Course.
Gates open at 11 a.m. Friday, yet fans start lining up at the gate before the sun comes up leading to the annual mad-dash to find the perfect picnic table in the backyard.
"We were first the last two years and they were second. It became a competition," said Mike James, who was second in line this year.
So what does the fan look for when finding the perfect picnic table? "Table in the shade, betting windows, bathrooms, all the essentials."
While there is plenty of action in the backyard, the track and the horses are the stars of the show. Jim Mudd has been coming to Opening Day for 40 years and this year he is enjoyed the morning with his grandson Andrew.
"The weather is beautiful. The track is beautiful. The whole atmosphere is just a little bit of heaven on earth," Mudd says.
