SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – More than 300 golfers participated in the 5th Annual Tech Valley Charity Golf Tournament at the Saratoga National Golf Club Wednesday.
In the past four years the event has raised $500,000 for local Make-A-Wish Northeast New York chapters and other Capital Region charities.
The event, which began with the first tee-off at 7:30 a.m., also included an evening reception with presentations from past wish recipients to have benefitted from the proceeds gathered.
Proceeds from the tournament have gone to recipients like Kelly Buyaskas, who swims competitively for Catholic Central High School in Troy. Buyaskas dreamed of one day becoming an Olympic swimmer. Unfortunately, her dreams were cut short when she developed Cystic Fibrosis, a hereditary disease that mainly impacts the lungs and the digestive system, ultimately causing severe breathing difficulties which will make competitive swimming impossible.
Buyaskas' heartfelt wish was to be among the Olympians at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She and her brother flew to London to tour the 2012 Olympic venues and attend events, including the opening ceremonies.
On average, granting an individual wish costs $10,000 and can include the chance for children to meet someone famous, try their hand at a profession or travel to a place they have never seen before.
