HUDSON, N.Y. -- Perry Pendall, a Chestertown man already behind bars and awaiting trial on rape and child pornography charges was back in court Tuesday after authorities say he tried to hire an inmate to murder his alleged victim.
With his feet bound and hands cuffed, Pendall was escorted into the courtroom by police to face a judge. District Attorney Paul Czajka told NEWS CENTER while still in jail, Pendall allegedly tried to hire in inmate for $125,000 to try to have the teen killed so she wouldn't testify against him.
"Fortunately he asked and solicited the wrong inmate who came forward," said Czajka. "This 13-year-old, presumably he was concerned about her testimony."
The Columbia County Sheriff Office was contacted in March by the parents of a girl who reported that an adult male had been having sexual contact with their daughter. The sheriff's office began an investigation which revealed that Pendall and the girl had met on the internet and that he had visited her home in Columbia County on several occasions.
He was charged with Rape in the 2nd-Degree a class D-Felony in April.
