Eleven displaced in overnight fire

PITTSFIELD, Mass. –The eleven occupants a four-family apartment house located on Dartmouth Street have been displaced following a Friday night fire.

Pittsfield Fire Department's Deputy Chief Mark Cancilla said the alarm came in just before 11 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke to be visible.

The residents, who were home at the time of the fire, escaped without injury. Firefighters also say they rescued a number of pets before extinguishing the fire completely.

One firefighter injured his knee in the effort and was transported to the hospital.

Fire officials say the damage extended from the basement into the walls of the first floor and throughout all four units.

The Red Cross is providing temporary housing to the eleven occupants.

The cause remains under investigation by the Pittsfield Fire and Police departments and the State Fire Marshall's Office.
