Vermont inmate on the loose

CHARLOTTE, Vt. - Vermont State Police are looking for a female inmate who walked away a work crew in Charlotte on Friday.

Police say 33-year-old Mindy Sue Champagne was part of a grounds cleaning crew out of the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington when she walked away around 11 am.

Upon receiving the call, members from the Vermont State Police were dispatched immediately to begin searching Champagne. K9 units were called in, as well, to help track the suspect.

Champagne is not believed to be armed, nor is she considered as dangerous. Champagne was serving up to a four year sentence for forgery and petit larceny.

She is described as a white female, 5'11" tall, approximately 180 lbs, with curly red hair, and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing grey sweatpants and a white shirt.

The Vermont State Police, along with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Vermont Department of Corrections continue to search for Champagne.
