SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The 20-year-old Schenectady man accused
of punching and kicking his pit bull in May will be appear in Schenectady City
Court for sentencing Tuesday morning.
DC Dunkel, of 23 Mynderse Street, was charged with
aggravated animal cruelty after the District Attorney's Office reviewed videos
recorded by neighbors that have been reported to show Dunkel beating his dog with
a shovel in April, followed by a second video that showed him punching and
kicking his 2-year-old male named "Con" in May. Both recordings were
reviewed, but it was the second video that resulted in the charges.
Dunkel claimed he was not abusing the dog, but disciplining him
for having destroyed cable wires and a new pool pump at the home.
"I love that dog, I just adopted him three months ago,"
Dunkel said. "Yeah, I hit my dog one time, so I don't know if that's the
definition of animal abuse, but I guess new laws say you're not allowed to hit
your dog at all."
Upon Dunkel's arrest, the dog was given veterinary attention and held in the
care of an SPCA volunteer.
