COHOES, N.Y. - Officials in Troy say a fully-involved fire took over buildings on Schuyler Street in Cohoes Thursday morning.
The blaze started at 20 Schuyler Street in Cohoes around 11 a.m. The fire burned a beauty salon and a couple residential apartments on the street.
No injuries have been reported. Some say they escaped the fire thanks to an alert neighbor.
"I thought it was just kids having fun with fireworks or something," said Grace Westfall, who quickly realized it was much more than that. "A neighbor came banging on my door and got us out," she said.
"I just yelled get out of your apartment," said Josh Hunter, who Grace credits for keeping her alive. "I probably would've died from smoke inhalation."
Now, Grace's concerns are shifting toward the owner of Angela's Salon, which was completely destroyed in the fire.
"It's an absolute tragedy. I know the owner of the salon and that place meant so much to her."
It wasn't just people who escaped the building Thursday, firefighters found a dog in a first floor apartment.
"They got the dog out and he was fine," said Cohoes Fire Chief Joe Fahd. "It was a good thing that came out of this."
Firefighters on scene need to take shifts while working to put the fire out, due to the extreme heat.
Investigators are working to determine a cause.
