4th of July festivities at the Empire State Plaza today

ALBANY, N.Y. – The 38th Annual Fourth of July fireworks show and celebration takes place Thursday at the Empire State Plaza.

Thee celebration kicks off at 4 p.m. with live music on the main stage by rock-n-roll performer Johnny Rivers and will continue throughout the day with entertainment and other activities. (See schedule below)

The fireworks display will begin at 9:25 p.m. and, for the first time this year, is being triggered by an electronic system to make the show more precise. The show should last about 30 minutes.

Check the Stormtracker Forecast.

A big focus on a family-friendly environment is being placed on this year's festivities. There will be kids' play areas on both sides of the concourse as well as a Family Fun Zone with pony rides, face painting and bounce rides. The Fun Zone is smoke and alcohol free.

The new rules also state there are to be no coolers, outside alcohol, or glass containers.  Attendees are still permitted to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages as long as they are not in glass containers or coolers. For those who do, all bags and backpacks will be subject to search. Alcohol and food will still be sold by vendors on site.

Free parking is available under the Empire State Plaza, in the East Parking garage located one block east of the Madison Ave. entrance to the plaza and in the Grand St. parking lot north of Madison Ave.  These two lots are open all day.

Organizers expect around 25,000 people to turn out for this year's event. The 4th of July festivities are co-sponsored by New York State and Price Chopper.

Attention Drivers: Several road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect for the event. Get a full list here.
