HERKIMER, N.Y. – After large amounts of rain, streets in Mohawk, Ilion, and Herkimer are turned into rivers Monday.
Over in Ilion, East Main Street has turned into a pond. NEWS CENTER reporter Marty Kasper saw people wading in water nearly waist deep through parts trying to get to their homes. This part of Herkimer County was washed out just last week, and now it's happening again.
Late Monday night, Herkimer Police said a flood control levee on
the Bellinger Brook in the Village of Herkimer has been comprised and was
in danger of failing. Police now report that the water in Bellinger Brook has subsided and they will not be doing any further evacuations at this time. However, there is no travel in the area, and roads are closed.
Portions of Herkimer County were evacuated, and emergency crews were under such stress that they asked people who live in the area that were not affected to help block streets off that were flooded.
