GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – This past week, several orange lobsters were discovered at Price Chopper locations across the state. The extremely rare, bright-orange crustaceans, appear as though they have already been cooked while still alive.
The chance of discovering an orange lobster is considered to be one in 10 million, according to Price Chopper, making the discovery of three—one in Guilderland, one in Middletown and one in Binghamton—a shocking rarity.
Price Chopper officials have been assured that the lobsters are perfectly safe to have in stores, as the color variation is simply a result of a rare genetic defect, causing lobsters to turn orange, blue, calico or white in some instances.
The lobsters will be sent to regional aquariums later this week, after the July 4th holiday.
Price Chopper says they have sold nearly 3 million pounds of lobster over the last three years, however these are the only instances of any with such rare coloration surfacing.
