Stretch of Erie Canal in Mohawk Valley still shut

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State officials say a stretch of the Erie Canal in the Mohawk Valley that was scheduled to reopen will remain closed because of high water.
The Canal Corp. says the waterway from Lock E-8 in Scotia in Schenectady County to Lock E-15 in Fort Plain in Montgomery County remains closed Friday. The agency had announced Thursday that the section wouldn't be reopened at 8 a.m. Friday as previously planned because of heavy rainfall predicted for the region.
Severe flooding from heavy rain is reported Friday morning along the Mohawk River in Herkimer County.
Officials say additional closures of other sections of the canal system are likely.
Sections of the Erie, Oswego, Cayuga-Seneca and Champlain canals have been shut down this month because of high water caused by heavy rains.
