Gloversville woman charged with 20 felonies related to tax fraud

MAYFIELD, N.Y. – A Gloversville woman faces 20 felony tax fraud charges.

Crystal Sweet, 38, of 462 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville, NY, was arrested at her residence and arraigned at the Town of Mayfield Court.

Sweet is accused of filing numerous false and fraudulent personal income tax returns in the names and social security numbers of several Gloversville residents - without their knowledge or consent.

She is alleged to have reported false employment and earned income on these returns, and then claimed numerous credits to maximize personal income tax refunds.  In total, she is accused of claiming approximately $30,000 in unjustified refunds for her personal use.

"The arrest is another opportunity to remind all taxpayers to be vigilant when it comes to guarding private information, including social security numbers, which clearly can be used for illegal purposes when they fall into the wrong hands," said Commissioner Mattox.

"We will continue to work diligently to uncover such blatant disregard for the law and protect the citizens of Fulton County," said District Attorney Sira.

Sweet was charged with:

  • 1 count of felony Grand Larceny in the Third-Degree
  • 3 counts of felony Identity Theft in the First-Degree
  • 1 count of felony Attempted Grand Larceny in the Third-Degree
  • 11 counts of felony Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First-Degree
  • 4 counts of  felony Identity Theft in the Second-Degree

The Tax Department says they uncovered and investigated the case, then referred it to Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira for prosecution.

Sweet is being held at Fulton County Jail in lieu of $25,000.00 cash bail or $50,000 bond.  Her next court appearance is scheduled for July 23, 2013.
