Officials identify man who drowned in Otis

OTIS, Mass. - Officials have identified the 22-year-old East Otis man whose body was recovered shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Otis Reservoir.

The Berkshire County District Attorney's Office says the search for Derrick Vonberg Jr.'s body began Saturday afternoon when rescue crews responded to a report that he had underwater.

Authorities said on Saturday Vonberg, his father 44-year-old Derrick Vonberg Sr., and a friend were fishing at the Otis Reservoir when the men decided to go swimming, but the son struggled and went under.

Authorities say Vonberg Sr. was unsuccessful in an attempt to save his son and was pulled from the water by a boater who rushed to the scene to help.

The Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause and manner of death was an accidental drowning.

Dive crews have been searching underwater and using sonar to try and find him since Saturday. Fire Chief Sandy Pinkham said neither men were wearing life jackets, which could have saved the man.
