SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The annual free summer lunch program for children in Schenectady begins Monday at several sites across the city.
For 17 years, the Schenectady Inner City Ministry's free summer lunch program has helped feed hungry children who are used to having lunch served to them.
For many children in the city, this meal may be the first of the day; their parents may already be at work when they get up or the family may be struggling to make ends meet.
The program serves kids age 18 and younger and expects to serve about 900 students daily, Monday through Friday until August 30th. All sites are closed Thursday, July 4. No enrollment is required. Last summer, more than 35,000 meals were served.
The program is funded by the NYS Education Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
