SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Flying Club held its 3rd annual Thiers Memorial Pistons & Props Fly/Drive-in at the Schenectady County Airport Saturday.
Whether arriving by car or plane, students, community members and pilots gathered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for day of food, music, helicopter rides, car shows and airplane displays as a part of International Biplane Day. For three consecutive years, the Flying Club partners with Capital Car Shows the previous two years to raise more than $2,500 for the Thiers Memorial Endowment Fund, which is used to provide flight training scholarships to students looking earn their private pilot's license.
The event featured a C-130 rescue/cargo aircraft from the Stratton Air National Guard 109th Airlift Wing, a local MedFlight helicopter, and the F-5 used in the making of the movie Top Gun. Capital Car Shows also showcased a selection of rat rods, muscle, classic and custom cars at the car show portion of the event. To top it off, the event also featured remote-controlled aircraft displays, flea market wars and photos with the International Biplane Association will make this a day for every taste.
