Man charged in arson case retains new lawyer

ALBANY, N.Y. -- With the possibility of facing the death penalty, the man charged with arson in the fire that killed three Schenectady children last month has retained a new lawyer with a history in similar cases.

Court documents this week reveal 27-year old Robert Butler, of Saratoga Springs has hired Rochester-based attorney Bill T. Easton.

According to his online biography, as a former public defender, he served a leading role in every capital trial in western New York since the death penalty was reinstated.

Butler will be tried in federal court, which opens the possibility of the death penalty. He's accused setting a Hulett Street home on fire, killing a 32-year-old man, his two and three-year-old children, and an 11-month old baby. A fourth child was air lifted to a burn center in Westchester and survived.
