SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Friday, June 21st is the first day of summer. It is also the first day for the next phase in life for many seniors in the Capital Region.
Seniors from Saratoga Springs High School and Shenendehowa High School walked across the stage at Saratoga Performing Arts Center Friday to accept their high school diplomas.
The graduations were held back to back; Saratoga at 9 a.m. and Shen at 1:15 p.m. The Shen graduation will stream live online here.
Empty seats were held at the Shen graduation in honor of Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers who were killed in a car accident on the Northway in December, and Nick Cammarata who passed away as a freshman from cancer. Their families walked across the stage and acceptted a diploma in their honor.
"It's a wonderful way to honor them. We were really
hesitant to come because of the emotions but I'm glad we did. We stayed because
the class is amazing and they're empowered to make a difference," said Janine Cammarata, Nick's mother.
Other high school graduations happening Friday are Rensselaer High School, Schenectady High School, Bethlehem High School, Watervliet High School, Fort Edward High School, Hudson High School, Lansingburgh High School, Schalmont High School, and Colonie Central High School.
Graduations happening Saturday are: Catskill High School, Amsterdam High School, Cohoes, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School, Scotia-Glenville High School, Shaker High School, Fonda-Fultonville High School, Glens Falls High School, Cobleskill High School, Mohonasen High School, Averill Park High School, and Guilderland High School.
