Local congregation notified FBI about terror plot suspect

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- A local congregation said it notified the FBI after Glendon Scott Crawford, 49, stopped in to pitch his plan to "protect the people of Israel."

Now, Crawford and  Eric Feight, 54, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists by use of a weapon of mass destruction after a lengthy undercover investigation that began in April 2012.

"He was very polite, very articulate. He talked about his understanding of history," said Rabbi Matt Cutler of the congregation Gates of Heaven.

According to Rabbi Cutler, Crawford's conversation then turned bizarre, like something out of a science fiction novel.

"[He spoke of] the need to protect Jewish people and people of Israel against their enemies," Cutler said.

The part about enemies caused the rabbi's administrative staff to become alarmed, and they wanted to get Crawford out of the building to be met by law enforcement.

The staff suggested Crawford go to the Jewish Federation where they called ahead to warn employees.

The Jewish Federation said after the phone call they contacted the FBI right away.

Rabbi Cutler believes Crawford's conversations at the synagogue 15 months ago were just the tip of the iceberg.
