ALBANY, N.Y. – Members of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association honored fallen sailors at a ceremony on the USS SLATER Saturday morning.
The third Saturday in June is recognized as Destroyer Escort Day to pay homage to the DE sailors killed in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War as well as the ten destroyer escort ships lost in action.
Destroyer escorts were used to escort convoys of merchant marine ships to prevent anti-submarine warfare. Over 150,000 men served in DE during World II through the Vietnam War.
USS SLATER is a national historic landmark and the last destroyer escort afloat in America.
USS SLATER is located on the Hudson River in downtown Albany.
