ALBANY, N.Y. -- With rain continuing to fall, the New York State Department of Transportation is offering some simple tips to keep drivers safe.
The number one danger with heavy rain is flash flooding, so DOT asks drivers to remember the following.
Do not drive through flooded areas, even if it looks like your car can handle it. It only takes six inches of water to reach the bottom of most vehicles and that amount of water can literally carry a car away.
Also if you drive into water you have no way of knowing how deep it is or what is underneath it. There could be no road at all.
If you find a road is washed out or covered in water turn around and take another route. If there is no other route then get out of the car and find higher ground.
Remember, your life is more important than your car, so be safe and always put your life first.
