ALBANY, N.Y. – Albany firefighters extinguished a fire at the old ten-story Wellington South Hotel on Howard Street Wednesday night.
Firefighters were called to 54 Howard St. just before 7 p.m. Wednesday night to the old Wellington annex for a fire. They tell the NEWS CENTER the fire was on the vacant building's fifth floor.
As they worked to put the fire out, first responders noticed a man on the roof.
Fortunately, the fire was small and quickly contained, eventually being put out. The next challenge was making sure it was safe to get the man off the roof. Once they determined the building was stable, the 16-year-old boy was removed from the building.
Albany Fire Chief Robert Forezzi says it's unclear how the fire started, but it appears that teenager was responsible.
He says it's still early in their investigation, so it's unclear how long the teen had been living in the building or if the fire was intentionally set.
