2 NY Army Guard units helping 3 upstate projects

COHOES, N.Y. (AP) - Members of two Army National Guard engineer units are helping three upstate New York communities with local projects.

Starting Saturday and continuing into Thursday, soldiers from the Guard's 1156th Engineer Co. will be working in Cohoes, near Albany, and in Beacon in the Hudson Valley.

In Cohoes, the guardsmen will be finishing up their 3-year project to help the city build a park on what was once the route of the Erie Canal. Meanwhile, other soldiers in the Kingston-based unit will be constructing a replica 1930s-era ranger cabin at the base of the historic Mount Beacon fire tower.

Soldiers with the Buffalo-based 152nd Engineer Support Co. will spend a week of their annual training period repairing drainage ditches and fixing roads at Bond Lake Park in Lewiston in Niagara County.
