The assignment desk is where the news hits first. The person running "the desk" is a news hound, both listening and looking for news. They answer the phone, monitor the scanners and weed through the hundreds of emails and press releases that come into the newsroom everyday. The assignment editor works closely with the news director and producers at the station and the reporters and photographers in the field, keeping everyone informed with new information about a story and helping determine where our resources should be deployed. They also help tune in and coordinate live shots.
Jeb started at the NEWS CENTER as an intern but has been at the assignment desk for more than 15 years. He has a wealth of contacts and knowledge of the area. He definitely has developed a scanner ear, often knowing where something is going on immediately, based on the sound of the person or recognizing the frequency on the scanner. What is so amazing about Jeb, is that he never seems burned out and is always fired up about running the desk for the day. So, it's not surprising he gave this answer when asked about what he likes most about his job, "The thing I enjoy most about my job is breaking news, especially when it is weather related."
Outside of work, Jeb loves to trout fish. He'll often take long hikes into the woods looking for the best fishing spots.(Lets see, loves following weather, the outdoors and trout fishing, who else at the station does that remind you of?.. CAP!!!) Jeb is also a big baseball and hockey fan and follows the NY Mets and Detroit Red Wings religiously.
