Tom directs our 5 pm, 6 pm and 11 pm newscasts. He also does other production related work during the day for stories that air on the evening newscasts. We often refer to where the director sits as the "hot seat". The buttons (and there are many) the directors push determine what goes out on air. They have to punch up the live shots, make the calls on which cameras to take, when to roll video and whose microphone to pot up.
Tom started back in January of 2003 as a morning director. His duties have also put him behind a camera, as a News/Production photographer. What does he love most about his job now as an evening director? "I love that every day is a different day and you never know what to expect when you walk in the doors each day. I love working as part of a team and live television is just that and it is quite amazing what we can do on a daily basis," he says.
Tom also loves sports and played football during his high school days in Middleburgh. And, he still plays! He's not just a television director, he is tournament director for the Annual NEKF Flag Football Tournament in Albany. All proceeds stay local and go to the Northeast Kidney Foundation. With his league's help, the Capital District Flag Football League (CDFFL) event draws over 200 players from our area to support the cause. You've seen Tom's work during our newscasts, if you'd like to see how he does out on the field, this years tournament is July 28.
Oh, one more thing from Tom, "Go Yankees!"
