Salam Al Haideri, 24, of Morgan Avenue in Niskyuna, was arrested early Wednesday morning by members of the Colonie Police Department at his home. Following an investigation that included assistance from the Albany PD, Albany Crime Analysis Center, FBI Albany Office and Niskayuna PD Haideri was identified as a possible suspect and located and arrested without incident.
He faces three felony charges of Predatory Sexual Assault, Rape first-degree, and Assault second-degree.
Police say a 19-year-old female victim came into the Mobil Station at 370 New Karner Road at 2:53 a.m. and told the employee that she had been attacked along Central Avenue.
The woman said she had been in Albany on North Pearl Street near Pine Street and was offered a ride home by two males previously unknown to the victim. During the ride, they allegedly pulled off of Central Avenue and she was attacked and sexually assaulted.
The victim suffered injuries consisting of a fractured orbital bone, fractured nose, and rib pain.
"She actually is still in the hospital being treated. We've had specialists in contact with her almost continuously since this started. She obviously has the physical trauma, going forward that will heal. The emotional trauma is what will be an issue," said Lt. Robert Winn of the Colonie Police.
Haideri was arraigned in Colonie Justice Court and remanded to Albany County Correctional Facility to next appear for a preliminary hearing in Colonie Court on June 10th at 6:00 p.m.
The man and vehicle profiled in the Tuesday photograph released by police have been identified and located and the subject faces no charges. The man was with the defendant and victim earlier in the night prior to the sexual assault.
Anyone with information about this case or the defendant is urged to contact the Colonie Police Department at 783-2744.
