Cuomo: Electronic tracking in place for patients

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo says an electronic tracking system to keep track of patients in state hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities in the event of evacuations is in place in time for hurricane season.

The statewide system called the New York State Evacuation of Facilities Disaster System or NYS e-FINDS is the result of a serious concern for evacuated patients during Superstorm Sandy last fall.

Cuomo says the secure, confidential and real-time system will allow hospital and nursing home staffs and relatives to quickly locate patients.

State facilities will use barcode wristbands so that a patient's location can be updated and tracked using handheld scanners, mobile phone applications, or by paper records if power or phone service is interrupted.

During Sandy, more than 20,000 patients were evacuated.
