WATERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - State police have arrested a northern New York man accused of battering his infant son, leaving the child with multiple fractures.
Troopers say 26-year-old Willie D. Smith III of Watertown faces second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child charges.
They say investigators alerted by a call to an abuse hotline found the 2-month-old boy with a fractured skull and fractures to both arms, both legs and his ribs, some in the process of healing and some possibly life-threatening. The boy, whose name wasn't released, was taken to a hospital.
Police say investigators determined Smith hit the child on the head with a closed fist one evening last month.
Smith was arraigned Friday in the town of Theresa court. He was being held Monday in Jefferson County Jail. Court officials weren't available to say if he has a lawyer.
