Bailey Wind has recently resumed her love of diving while still trying to recover from the horrific accident she was in last December.
17-year-old Bailey spoke with the NEWS CENTER saying how difficult it is to try and get back to the level she was at before that accident, and what motivates her to do so.
On the diving board, Bailey's facial expression shows focus and poise. But on the inside, she is terrified. "I'm just scared to get hurt again," she says.
And no one blames her; she's been through something no high school senior should ever have to experience.
Shaker High School senior Bailey Wind was involved in the Northway accident with three other teens on December 1, 2012. The accident killed her boyfriend 17-year-old Chris Stewart and her good friend 17-year-old Deanna Rivers. Matt Hardy, a Shenendehowa High School senior, was also severely injured in the crash.
In the accident, Bailey suffered a broken neck, lost a number of teeth, and had a titanium plate placed in her jaw.
Now the prolific diver, whose skills earned her a full scholarship to the University of Tennessee, is finally building up the courage to dive again.
"I'm not just going to give up, I've been doing this since I was 8-years-old and I know that Chris doesn't want me to give up," Bailey says. "I've worked so hard for my goal and I'm going to keep doing it no matter how hard it's going to be."
Bailey got back in the pool a month ago, taking it slow at first. Now, she is jumping off the high board. And this fall, she is sticking with her plan and heading to the University of Tennessee where she will continue her diving career. The way she's progressing, her coaches, friends, and family say they know she'll do just fine.
