Local soldier killed in line of duty returns home

PITTSFIELD, Mass. - The body of a Berkshire County soldier killed while serving overseas is brought home to his family, friends and supporters on Wednesday.

The body of 24-year-old U.S. Army Specialist Mitchell Daehling, of Dalton, killed in Afghanistan last week has returned home. Daehling was a 2006 graduate of Wahconah Regional High School.

His body arrived at Barnes Air National Guard Airport in Westfield Wednesday morning. The hearse then traveled to Pittsfield to a procession down North Street accompanied by the Patriot Guard, to Dery Funeral Home in Pittsfield.

Daehling was one of three soldiers killed May 14, 2013 by an IED. He will be awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the NATO Medal for his services.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Saint Anges Church in Dalton, Mass. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Saint Anges Church.

Specialist Daehling will finally be transported to Lewiston, Idaho to be buried next to his grandfather - one of his final wishes.
