SCOTIA, N.Y. - After decades of searching, the Plath sisters have found their long-lost sister "Lory."
For more than 20 years, 39-year-old Denise Plath-Slattery of Scotia says she has used every method possible to find her sister "Lory" and still came up empty handed. So she turned to Facebook as means to try and find her.
On March 6, 2013, Denise posted a photo to NEWS10 Facebook page of herself holding up a sign requesting help finding her sister Lori Ann Plath. Since the post, the photo was shared almost 13,000 times by people all over the country.
But it wasn't a Facebook share that found "Lory."
"Lory," whose name was changed to Jennifer at the age of three, says she saw the NEWS CENTER's special report on Denise's social media search for her sister Lory that aired last Monday night.
Jennifer says she recognized the baby picture, has the same birth date, and "just knew" it was her who Denise was looking for.
And now it has been confirmed by DNA Diagnostics Center testing: They are sisters.
Jennifer, who lives in Colonie, says she knew she had at least two adopted sisters and had been hoping to find them, but when she saw the story air on 10ABC she says, "I just knew," and contacted reporter Christine O'Donnell on Facebook.
After speaking with Christine, Denise - the youngest of the four sisters - surprised her two oldest sisters who both live in Schenectady, 44-year-old Sandra French and 43-year-old Brenda Hayes, with Jennifer, their biological sister.
"Are you serious?" Brenda asked as Jennifer, a.k.a. "Lory," walked toward the picnic table in a field behind The Beukendaal Fire Department where they all planned to meet on Friday afternoon.
"This is your sister, Jennifer," Denise said to her sisters, as the ladies got up and walked toward the woman.
Denise says she was 12-years-old when she found out she had three older sisters and that they had all been adopted. She says after looking through a photo album, she confronted her parents.
"They said 'unfortunately we could not financially handle them, or to take care of the burden' and they gave them over to social services," said Denise.
In August 1988, Denise says her second-oldest sister, Brenda, found her during a visit to the hospital to see her biological father. And in November 1993, Denise says a social worker helped her to find her oldest sister, Sandra Marie French.
Denise says she has contacted a private investigator, the Department of Health, and even the Supreme Court, but she has not been able to find "Lory."
The DNA Tests Results were provided by DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC) out of Fairfield, Ohio. For more information about the company go to this link: www.dnacenter.com or call 1-800-825-2986
