National Women Build Week kicks off, volunteers begin construction

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – This weekend, hundreds of volunteers are helping out at Habitat for Humanity construction sites in all 50 states, including here in New York.

The Schenectady County Habitat for Humanity kick-off was held Saturday morning at the first Women Build home for 2013 at 918 Michigan Ave. in the city. The Women Build program challenges woman to devote at least one day to the effort of creating affordable housing.

Lowe's Heroes and volunteers began construction on a new home for the Walker family. More than 25 volunteers worked two shifts on Saturday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

"I greatly appreciate the opportunity of being chosen as a Partner family homeowner for the Women Build Habitat home in Schenectady," said Heather Walker. "No one knows the joy this brings to my heart, especially offering a "forever home" to my son where he will not have to be uprooted again.

Women Build has constructed five houses since 2004 for families in Schenectady County.

"It's so exciting for us to focus on women this week," said Jeffrey Clark, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady. "Our women volunteers are very passionate about this effort, and they've volunteered a lot of hours already, learning skills necessary to help eliminate poverty housing in Schenectady County."
