Town of Moreau fires child sex offender from park job

MOREAU, NY -- The Supervisor of the Town of Moreau called the town's recent hiring of a child sex offender an oversight.

Town Supervisor Preston Jenkins said that the oversight in hiring 57-year-old Robert Roberts as a part-time employee happened during the interview process. He said that during that time no background check was performed, which is often the case for part-time employees hired by the town.

Roberts' job included working in the town's park system. Jenkins said Roberts' primary duties were to clean the park, and that he did not have contact with any children.

The town of Moreau later discovered that Roberts was on sex offender list for sexual conduct with a child under the age of 17, a crime he was arrested for in 2008. Roberts' parole included  the restriction of maintaining no contact with children under 18.

After finding out about his criminal history, the town terminated Roberts from the position immediately.

"This park is usually filled with children and families," said Robyn Weinberger, a mother who frequents the park with her son. "It worries me he was here, but I can understand how things slip by."

Jenkins told the NEWS CENTER that the hiring procedure is now something the town is looking to change moving forward.

"That is an oversight that needs to be corrected immediately especially with our children in place," Amy Johnson said.
