Mass. panel considers rules for medical marijuana

Posted:

BOSTON (AP) - State health officials are set to approve final regulations for the use of medical marijuana in Massachusetts.

The expected vote on Wednesday by the Public Health Council will pave the way for the voter-approved law to take effect, though it will likely be several more months before the first medical marijuana dispensaries open in the state.

The proposed regulations will allow patients approved for medical marijuana to receive up to 10 ounces of marijuana as a 60-day supply, though some acutely ill patients could receive more with permission from their doctors.

The law allows marijuana to be used for several medical conditions including cancer, Parkinson's disease and HIV.

The Department of Public Health plans to license up to 35 dispensaries around the state.
